KiwImage update to project members - December 2008
Hello Everyone, just a quick update to keep you informed of things that are going on with KiwImage.
KiwImage Status
We have been receiving imagery on a regular basis for the past few months; see the attached status map for a full list of the sheets that are available. The purchase of imagery will taper off now to the end of the financial year, as we can only purchase to the funds that we have available. However there is a hard drive in circulation now, & I am compiling the next drive at the moment. I will hold off sending the 2nd drive as we approach the Christmas break and will send it out mid January.
Web site
The domain kiwimage.govt.nz has been reserved and I have put up a temporary page which has little more information than my contact details. I will be adding the status map and general information to the site over the next few months. I welcome any ideas that you may have for content for the site.
Web Server
As you will all know it is the intention to have a web server to assist with the dissemination of all the KiwImage data. Recently an RFP was placed on GETS to provide a web server solution. We have reviewed all the responses and the KiwImage Governance Board has decided not to proceed with a web server at this point of the project, and instead concentrate on the purchase of further imagery. The manual delivery method that we currently have will remain in the short term, which seems to be working well so far.
DEM & Ground Control Contributions
As part of dealing with a large imagery project like KiwImage, there are going to be some areas that cannot meet the accuracy specifications due to factors like lack of ground control or errors in the DEM model. However we endeavour to achieve the best possible accuracy and with the help of various members we have been improving the accuracy in those difficult regions.
Landcare Research kindly supplied their 25m DEM. This has now been merged with the SRTM2 DEM to create a very good base DEM which will now be used for the remainder of the project.
Also councils in the Northland group kindly supplied ground control for their region. This will be used as supplementary control in those areas where there is a lack of ground information.

AGM Meeting
We are hoping to hold an AGM meeting, likely to be held in Wellington , early to mid March 2009. This will all depend on availability of a suitable venue and other factors. I will send out more information about this in January, when I should know more, but for now you can pencil it into your calendars.
Geospatial Intelligence Organisation
As some of you may know the former JGSF has had a name change and we are now GIO. This does not change anything from a KiwImage perspective, and all my contact details remain the same.
